Estepona anchors the quiet western end of the Costa del Sol, roughly 80 km from Málaga Airport — far enough that the package-holiday crowds thin out, close enough that everything on the coast is still a day trip. The old town is the best-preserved on this stretch: whitewashed lanes hung with flower pots, the Ruta de Murales street-art trail, and Plaza de las Flores at its heart. If you're based here for a week, a rental car turns the town from a pretty-but-static base into a launchpad for the whole western coast, the Ronda mountains and even Gibraltar.

Pickup in Estepona works differently to the airport. There's no big rental centre; instead you'll find a handful of pickup points around town — typically near the marina and along the main avenues — and, more usefully, delivery. Most suppliers covering Estepona will bring the car to your hotel or apartment at an agreed time and collect it again at the end, which spares you a taxi and works well for part-stay rentals. Book delivery a few days ahead in July and August, when slots fill up fast.

Should you just rent at Málaga Airport instead? If you'll be driving from day one, probably yes: the airport has the deepest choice and the sharpest prices, and you skip an 80 km transfer that costs real money by taxi. But if you only need a car for two or three excursion days in the middle of your stay, renting in town for those days usually works out cheaper than a full week of airport rental plus hotel parking — and delivery makes it painless.

Driving out of Estepona is simple. The free A-7 coast road (following the old N-340) runs right past town and is fine outside peak season; the AP-7 toll motorway runs parallel just inland and is worth every euro in July and August, when the A-7 around Marbella turns into stop-and-go. For Ronda, drive 15 minutes east to San Pedro de Alcántara and take the A-397 — some 45 km of sweeping, well-surfaced mountain bends that is a highlight in itself.

Day trips are Estepona's strong suit. Marbella and Puerto Banús sit 25–30 minutes east; Casares, one of the prettiest white villages on the coast, hangs off its crag 20 minutes inland; Gibraltar is about 45 minutes west, and Tarifa — kitesurf beaches and views across to Africa — about an hour and a quarter. Ronda makes a comfortable full-day loop. In the other direction, Mijas and Fuengirola are under an hour away on the toll road.

Parking is genuinely easy by Costa del Sol standards. Underground car parks by the marina and on the edge of the old town cost a few euros for an afternoon, and blue-zone street parking is findable outside August. Just don't drive into the old town itself — the lanes are narrow and mostly residents-only. A compact automatic is the sweet spot here; take a convertible if the coast and mountain drives are half the point of the trip.
