The coastal drive: A-7 and the old N-340

This is what the car is for. The old N-340 coast road and the free A-7 thread the entire Costa del Sol with the sea on one side, and with the roof down the run between Marbella and Estepona turns from a transfer into an event. Go early: before nine the light is soft, the road is quiet and the air is still cool; by mid-morning in summer the A-7 fills with commuter and beach traffic and the magic thins out. For pure pleasure, pick the stretches where the road hugs the water — around Mijas Costa and west of Marbella towards Estepona — and treat the AP-7 toll road as your fast, dull option for simply getting somewhere. A convertible rewards the slow road; there's no prize for arriving first. Build the drive around a destination — breakfast in Estepona's flower-filled old town, lunch at a beach chiringuito — and the day organises itself.

Sun and heat: the practical bit

Andalusian sun is stronger than it feels at 90 km/h. The airflow hides the burn, so sunscreen, sunglasses and a cap are genuinely equipment rather than accessories — and keep water in the car. In July and August the pleasant top-down windows are early morning and evening; at three in the afternoon the sensible move is roof up, air conditioning on, and there is no shame in it. The sweet spot for a convertible on this coast is April to June and September to October: warm enough for all-day open driving, cool enough that you arrive relaxed rather than roasted. Winter works too — locals happily drive open on sunny January days — just keep a layer within reach. A windproof jacket and a light scarf keep evening drives comfortable well into October.

Boot space: what actually fits

Be realistic before you book. The folding roof eats most of the boot, so a typical two-seater takes one cabin-size case plus a soft bag — and that's with the roof up; some models lose part of that space the moment the roof folds down. Two people with a week of light luggage: fine. A family, golf clubs and a pram: wrong car entirely. Security also matters more in a soft-top than in anything else you can rent. Never leave anything visible in the cabin, and don't treat the boot as a safe at beach car parks or viewpoints. The routine that works: drop the luggage at the hotel first, then go driving with the car empty.

Mountain passes: the A-397 to Ronda

The best convertible road in the region isn't on the coast at all. The A-397 from San Pedro de Alcántara up to Ronda packs roughly fifty kilometres of sweeping curves and climbs past 1,000 metres, with the Mediterranean shrinking in your mirrors at every hairpin. Top down, early in the morning, this is the drive you will still be describing to people years later. Altitude changes the rules, though: Ronda can easily be ten degrees cooler than the beach, so take a layer even in high summer. Watch for cyclists on the climb and slow traffic on summer weekends, and use the viewpoints to let faster cars past — you are not up there to hurry. If fifty kilometres of hairpins sounds like too much, the shorter climb from Marbella up to Ojén and the Refugio de Juanar delivers a taste of the same scenery in half an hour.

When a convertible is the wrong choice

A convertible is a joy machine, not a logistics tool, and it's the wrong rental in some very common situations. Four adults with luggage: no. A holiday built around supermarket runs, airport pickups for visiting family, or a baby seat plus pram: no. Long motorway days where you'd keep the roof up anyway: you're paying the premium for nothing. It's also worth skipping if you'll park on the street every night — a soft top on a quiet street invites attention — or if your dates fall in the wet weeks of late autumn. If the honest answer is that you need space, seats or a low price, take a compact or an SUV for the fortnight and rent the convertible for one perfect day instead. The good news: on this coast the joy per kilometre is so high that one day is usually enough.
