Is a 4 Series Cabrio practical for two weeks, or just for show?
It is the convertible that survives a real holiday. Unlike the Z4 or a Boxster it has four seats and a boot you can still open with the roof stowed, so two adults plus one large case and a cabin bag works without planning. The back seats are genuinely short-haul: fine from Marbella to Puerto Banús, tight from Málaga to Granada. If four adults are travelling with luggage for a week, the honest answer is a family SUV, not this.
Which roads actually justify the roof?
The A-397 from San Pedro up to Ronda is the one — switchbacks through the Sierra Bermeja with almost no traffic outside August. The old coast road from Marbella to Estepona beats the AP-7 for scenery if you are not in a hurry. Avoid dropping the roof on the AP-7 itself: above 100 km/h the noise makes conversation work, and the toll stretch is the least interesting driving on the whole coast.
When is the roof down actually pleasant?
April to mid-June and September to late October, most of the day. In July and August the usable window is before 11:00 and after 19:00 — midday sun on the Costa del Sol will drive you back under the roof within twenty minutes, and the black leather gets genuinely hot. The soft top raises and lowers at low speed, so you can change your mind at a junction rather than committing at the rental desk.
What about the deposit and the parking?
Premium convertibles carry a higher deposit than a compact, held on a credit card in the main driver's name — budget for that before you land. For parking, the car is wide: Marbella's casco antiguo and Ronda's centre are best handled from an underground car park rather than a kerbside space. Never leave anything visible with the roof down, including in guarded car parks.
