Málaga is the one place on this coast where the honest advice is to think carefully before you rent at all — and then to rent anyway, but at the right moment. The city itself is compact, walkable and unusually well served: the Picasso Museum, the Alcazaba, the Roman theatre, the Centre Pompidou and the Soho street-art quarter all sit within twenty minutes of each other on foot, and the cercanías C-1 train reaches the airport in about twelve minutes. A car parked in a city-centre garage for four days is money spent on nothing.

What changes the maths is the low-emission zone. Málaga's historic centre is a ZBE, monitored by camera, and the streets inside it were laid out long before cars existed. Driving in is not a matter of finding a clever route — it is a fine arriving by post weeks later. Treat the ring of underground car parks as the edge of the map: Plaza de la Marina beside the port, Alcazaba below the fortress, Salitre and Cervantes further out. All are paid, all are within a short walk of everything worth seeing, and all are cheaper than the alternative.

The smart pattern here is to rent for the days you leave the city rather than the days you are in it. Offices cluster around the María Zambrano station and the streets north of the Alameda, which means you can arrive by AVE from Madrid or Seville, spend two days on foot, then collect a car for the inland trips and drop it at the airport on your way home. Airport pickup remains the cheapest and widest choice — the airport is only 8 km away and the fleets there are several times larger — so if you want wheels from the first hour, collect at arrivals and park on the city's edge.

Once you are out, Málaga is the best-connected base in Andalusia. The A-7 runs both ways along the coast: Nerja and the Axarquía cliffs to the east, the whole Costa del Sol west through Torremolinos, Fuengirola and Marbella. Inland the A-45 climbs north to Antequera in about 45 minutes, with its dolmens and the Torcal limestone maze, and continues to Córdoba. The A-92 heads east to Granada in roughly an hour and a half.

The day trips that justify the rental are the ones public transport handles badly. Caminito del Rey is under an hour north and effectively needs a car unless you take a tour. Antequera, El Torcal, the Montes de Málaga natural park behind the city and the white villages of the Axarquía — Frigiliana, Cómpeta — all fall into the same category. Ronda is an hour and three quarters by the mountain road and repays an early start.

Two local details worth knowing. Petrol is meaningfully cheaper at the stations along the A-7 and the industrial edges than at the few forecourts near the centre, so fill up on your way back rather than in town. And if your hotel advertises parking, check whether it means its own garage or a discounted rate at a public one several streets away — in the old centre it is very often the latter, and the walk with luggage is worth knowing about in advance. For the city and the inland roads alike, an economy hatch or compact automatic is the right size; nothing here rewards a large car.
