Seville Airport sits 10 km north-east of the city on the A-4, and it is a calmer, smaller operation than Málaga: one terminal, a modest row of in-terminal rental desks, and cars parked a short walk from arrivals rather than a shuttle ride away. That simplicity is its main advantage. The fleets here are smaller too, which matters more than the convenience — in Semana Santa, during the Feria de Abril and across the spring weekends, the airport genuinely runs out of cars. Book weeks ahead for those dates rather than days.

The first thing to settle is whether you want the car from the moment you land. For Seville itself the answer is usually no. The historic centre is a low-emission zone, Santa Cruz is a maze of alleys that were never intended for vehicles, and the city's own public transport plus your own feet cover everything from the cathedral to Triana comfortably. A car collected on arrival mostly becomes a parking problem. The pattern that works is to spend your Seville days on foot and pick the car up when you leave — either back at the airport or from a city office — so you pay for it only on the days it actually moves.

When you do drive out, Seville is the best starting point in western Andalusia. Córdoba is about an hour and three quarters north-east on the A-4, an easy motorway run to the Mezquita. Cádiz is roughly an hour and a quarter south down the AP-4, with Jerez and its sherry bodegas a convenient stop on the way. Carmona, walled and Roman-founded, is half an hour east; Itálica, where Trajan was born, barely fifteen minutes north.

The drive that justifies the rental on its own is the road to Ronda. Heading south-east on the A-375 and A-374 takes you through Grazalema and the Sierra de Grazalema natural park — the wettest place in Spain, improbably, and a sequence of white villages stacked on limestone. Allow two hours each way and treat it as the day, not a transfer. West, the Doñana wetlands and El Rocío are about an hour and a half, and the marshland tracks there are for guided vehicles, not your hire car.

Heat is a real planning factor at this airport in a way it is not on the coast. Seville regularly passes 40 °C in July and August, and a car left in an open lot becomes unusable for twenty minutes. Check the air conditioning before you leave the parking bay rather than on the motorway, park in shade or underground wherever you have the choice, and carry water on the longer inland legs where service areas thin out.

For the return, two habits. Fill the tank at one of the stations on the A-4 close to the airport instead of the last forecourt on the approach road, and take the full-to-full policy wherever it is offered. And if your itinerary ends on the coast rather than back here, ask about a one-way drop at Málaga — it is a common pairing, usually available for a fee, and it turns Seville-in and Málaga-out into a proper Andalusian loop instead of a there-and-back.
