Torremolinos is where the Costa del Sol began, and it remains the most convenient piece of it: 15 minutes from Málaga Airport on the A-7, with long sandy beaches at Playamar and El Bajondillo, the old fishing quarter of La Carihuela and its seafood chiringuitos, and the cercanías train sliding into the centre. Convenience cuts both ways, though — because the airport is so close, you have real freedom in how and where you rent, and a car is what turns a beach week here into a proper Andalusian trip.

Renting in town works the usual coastal way: a handful of pickup points around the centre and the main N-340 avenue rather than one big rental campus, plus hotel and apartment delivery, which most suppliers covering Torremolinos offer. Given the distances involved, some travellers simply take the cercanías one stop to the airport and collect there instead — both approaches are legitimate, so let price and timing decide.

That's the honest comparison: Málaga Airport is so close that its bigger fleets and sharper prices are only ever 15 minutes away. Rent at the airport if you want the car for the whole stay. Rent in Torremolinos — or have it delivered — if the car is only for two or three excursion days, or if you booked a carless beach holiday and changed your mind once the towel routine wore thin. Off-airport pickups also sidestep the arrivals-hall queues of high summer.

Driving out is quick in every direction. East, you're past Málaga in 20 minutes — park at the edge, as the historic centre is a low-emission zone (ZBE) — and on to Nerja and the cliff-hung village of Frigiliana in about an hour. Inland, the A-357 leads to the Caminito del Rey gorge walk in roughly 45 minutes, and the A-45 climbs toward Antequera and Granada. West, the A-7 strings together Benalmádena (10 minutes), Fuengirola (15) and Marbella (40); the AP-7 toll matters only beyond Fuengirola in July and August. For a longer day, Ronda is about an hour and a half away, and Granada's Alhambra a shade over ninety minutes via the A-45 and A-92 — book Alhambra tickets well ahead, especially in spring.

In town itself the car is honestly optional: the centre around Calle San Miguel, the Bajondillo lift and steps, and the seafront promenade are all walkable, and that's part of the charm. Plan your driving days around trips out, and let the car rest on beach days — which is exactly why the rent-for-part-of-the-stay pattern suits Torremolinos so well. An economy hatch or compact automatic covers everything the area asks of it.

Parking is medium-difficulty: the dense central grid around La Nogalera fills fast, so head for the underground car parks in the centre or the lots behind Playamar and La Carihuela, and walk the last stretch. Many hotels keep garages — worth confirming when you book August dates. Avoid leaving anything visible in the car at beach lots; it's the one standard precaution the coast asks of you.
