Fuengirola is the practical middle of the Costa del Sol: about 30 minutes from Málaga Airport and 30 minutes from Marbella on the A-7, with a 7 km seafront promenade, the Moorish Sohail castle at its western end and one of Spain's best small zoos, the Bioparc, in the centre. It's flat, walkable and well-connected — the cercanías train runs to Málaga and the airport — so the honest question isn't whether you can survive without a car here. It's what you'd miss: Mijas Pueblo on the hill above, the white villages, Ronda, and the quieter beaches between the towns.

Renting in Fuengirola itself is easy. Pickup points cluster around the centre and the main avenues rather than in one big rental compound, and most suppliers covering the town also deliver to hotels and apartments along the seafront and in Los Boliches — usually the most convenient option if you're staying a week and only want the car for part of it. Confirm the return arrangements when you book: an agreed hand-back at your accommodation beats hunting for an office on your last morning.

Fuengirola versus Málaga Airport is a genuine toss-up. The airport is only half an hour away and has the widest choice and keenest prices, so if you land and want wheels from day one, collect there and drive down the A-7. But if you're already settled in Fuengirola — or arriving by train — renting in town for your excursion days avoids a pointless round trip and a week of paying for a car that mostly sits in a car park.

Driving out is refreshingly simple. The A-7 runs along the back of town and gets you to Marbella or Málaga in about half an hour each; the AP-7 toll running parallel is worth it on summer weekends. The classic first outing is the short, steep climb to Mijas Pueblo — 15 minutes from the seafront to whitewashed lanes and coast views. For Ronda, allow about an hour and a quarter via the A-7 and the A-397 mountain road from San Pedro, one of Andalusia's great drives.

With a car, day trips fan out in every direction: Benalmádena's Puerto Marina and cable car 10 minutes east, Marbella and Puerto Banús half an hour west, Málaga's museums half an hour east (park at the edge — the historic centre is a low-emission zone), and the white villages inland. Families do well here: the Bioparc, the castle and the wide, gently shelving beaches fill the no-driving days, and a family SUV or seven-seater swallows the beach kit for the rest.

Parking is the good news story. Fuengirola has plentiful underground car parks around the centre and the port, surface lots near Sohail castle, and street parking that's actually findable outside August. Most hotels have garages. If you're choosing a car with the town in mind, an economy hatch or compact automatic is ample — pick the bigger car only if the whole family and its luggage are coming along.
