Málaga Airport is 55 km away — about 40 minutes on the AP-7 toll — and almost always cheaper, with a far bigger fleet. Collect there if you want the car from day one. Renting in Marbella makes sense if you arrived by transfer, are staying a week or more, and only need the car for a few excursion days; hotel and villa delivery is the local default.
Never drive into the casco antiguo — the lanes are residents-only after 18:00 and barely car-width. Use the underground car parks at Avenida del Mar or Plaza de la Marina for the old town, the paid garages beside the marina in Puerto Banús, and La Cañada shopping centre north of town for free parking with a short bus or taxi hop. Most Golden Mile hotels have their own garage, usually for a nightly fee.
About 55 km — 40 to 50 minutes by car. The quick way is the AP-7 toll motorway (roughly €5–8); the free A-7 coastal road is slower and busy in summer. With your own car you skip the shared-shuttle wait and stop where you like along the coast.
For the old town and Puerto Banús you can walk. But the best beaches sit between towns, and the white villages and day trips — Ronda, Mijas, Gibraltar — are awkward by bus. A compact automatic handles the coast road and the climbs comfortably and pays for itself over a few outings.
